Newport Township firefighters were called to a serious house fire this morning in the 35,000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The home is located far from the road and sits just behind I-94, near the toll booth, making access difficult. When crews arrived, they had to navigate a long driveway before spotting the flames. Upon entry, they discovered a large two-story residence engulfed in fire on the upper level.
Because the area lacks hydrants, the incident was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm, then to a second alarm within an hour. A single engine and a 75-foot quint made it up the driveway, while a relay operation was established from the street. Three portable water tanks were set up along the road, with two engines supplying 5-inch lines to the quint and the engine in the driveway.
As the fire spread and intensified, crews were forced to switch to a defensive strategy. Hand lines and an aerial ladder were deployed, and due to the high water demand and long distances for tenders to refill and return, the alarm was upgraded to a fourth alarm to bring in more water tankers.
Fire departments from both Illinois and Wisconsin responded, including Newport Township, Wauconda, Round Lake, Zion, Antioch, Winthrop Harbor, Waukegan, Beach Park, Gurnee, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Grayslake, Richmond, McHenry Township, Countryside, Lake Villa, Fox Lake, Lake Forest, and several others. A Quad 2 Rehab Unit and Mobile Command Post also arrived on scene.
Photographer Larry Shapiro captured the intense efforts, showing tankers dumping water into portable tanks, engines working from the driveway, and the devastating destruction of the home’s upper levels. The fire caused significant damage, and crews are still assessing the situation.
