Another department looks into consolidating emergency dispatch – Lemont FPD (update)

A follow-up article on Lemont Fire Protection’s decision to outsource emergency dispatch services has been released, revealing key details about the move that will impact local staff and operations.

Last week, the district’s emergency fire and medical dispatchers were informed that their roles could be taken over by an external provider. On Thursday, the Fire Protection District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the plan to outsource these critical services. Starting in April, all emergency calls in Lemont will be handled through Orland Central, a regional call center known for its advanced technology and efficient response system.

This decision means the elimination of 9 dispatcher positions—3 full-time and 6 part-time—when the transition is complete. Fire Chief George Rimbo emphasized during the meeting that the board had carefully considered the implications of the move. “We didn’t take this lightly,” he said. “We truly believe we’re making the right choice for the future of our district.”

The shift comes as a result of financial constraints. A recent court ruling forced the fire district to stop monitoring commercial fire alarms, which had previously funded in-house dispatch operations. Without that revenue stream, maintaining internal dispatch services became financially unsustainable, according to Rimbo.

Outsourcing to Orland Central is expected to significantly cut costs. Currently, the district spends about $116 per call with in-house dispatch, but this could drop to just $39 per call with the new arrangement. That’s projected to save approximately $235,000 annually.

Orland Central also offers more advanced technology than what Lemont currently uses. While the district’s current system is valued at around $60,000, Orland provides a state-of-the-art computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system worth $1 million. This system allows for real-time tracking of emergency vehicles, ensuring the closest unit is always dispatched to an incident. The improved efficiency could lead to faster response times and better service for residents.

Orland Central is one of only two fire/EMS/rescue dispatch centers in the state and acts as a backup to the statewide MABAS Communication System. In 2012, the center handled around 19,000 calls across three communities, including Oak Forest and Calumet City. Lemont, by comparison, handles roughly 3,000 calls each year.

This change marks a major shift for the Lemont Fire Protection District, signaling both a financial necessity and a step toward modernized emergency response. While the decision has raised concerns among employees and residents, officials say it’s a necessary move to ensure long-term stability and efficiency.

Thanks, Dan.
