Asian PMMA market rejuvenates

After the fall in demand for products that began in the fall of 2008, the Asian petrochemical industry is now out of the woods. The polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) market has recently become active again due to the strong growth in LCD TV sales.

According to the latest statistics, due to the slow recovery in global consumption, especially in the Chinese market, South Korea’s petrochemicals exports have mostly increased in September. Among them, PMMA’s export growth has been fastest, with a year-on-year increase of 174%. This is mainly due to PMMA. The main end-user - the impact of rapid growth in demand for liquid crystal displays. A large manufacturer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and PMMA in Asia stated: “Many Asian countries have a strong demand for LCD TVs. The new generation of LCD TV LED backlights use white LED light sources to further reduce the number of displays. Thickness and increased energy efficiency have become a trend in the development of LCD TVs. The 4 mm LGP used in a 40-inch LCD TV requires 4 kg of MMA monomer.”

At present, the total PMMA market in Asia is about 750,000 to 800,000 tons/year, of which 200,000 to 220,000 tons/year are used for light guides for liquid crystal displays (including LCD TVs, personal computers, and other electronic products). The demand for PMMA for the production of LCD TV light guides is 20,000 tons/year, and is expected to increase to 40,000 tons/year in 2010 and 80,000 tons/year in 2011. The above forecast is based on the recently announced capacity expansion plans of Samsung Electronics of South Korea, LG Display, Japan Sharp and Sony Corporation.

In terms of production, the Japanese Mitsubishi Rayon and Asahi Kasei’s devices are currently producing MMA at full capacity, which mainly meets the demand for LCD TV light guide plates. This year, the 100,000-ton/year project for the 90,000-ton/year MMA project in Dashan, South Korea, and Evonik Degussa in Shanghai has also been completed, and most of the products have been digested by the local market. Japan's Sumitomo Chemical and Lucite International MMA Singapore will also complete the expansion plan by the end of this year. Mitsubishi Rayon and Asahi Kasei will also complete their respective capacity expansion projects by the end of 2011, with new capacity of 160,000 tons/year. According to industry insiders, due to the rapid growth in demand for PMMA in Asia, these newly added production capacities will not have a negative impact on the supply and demand balance of MMA in Asia.
