Box Alarm in Des Plaines, 2-14-21

A fire broke out late at night at Hugo’s Frog Bar, located inside the Rivers Casino, due to accumulated grease igniting in the cooking ventilation system and rooftop exhaust fans. The incident occurred just after 10 p.m., but no injuries were reported. The Des Plaines Fire Department quickly brought the fire under control and fully extinguished it by just after 11 p.m. The damage was limited to the kitchen hood, ductwork, and part of the roof, with only minor water damage in other areas. One guest who was evacuated during the incident sought medical attention and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for a non-life-threatening condition. While the casino reopened early Monday, Hugo’s Frog Bar remained closed as an investigation continued. Under Illinois’ current COVID-19 guidelines, casinos are allowed to operate at 50% capacity while maintaining 24-hour hours. Rivers Casino is no exception, and its usual schedule remains in effect despite the recent fire. The image above shows a photo of the fire scene, captured by Larry Shapiro.
