Chicago FD special operations apparatus (part 4 of 4)

This is the final installment of our four-part series exploring the equipment and tools used at the CFD Special Operations warehouse. In this post, we take a closer look at some of the vehicles and machinery that support the department’s critical operations. First up is Battalion Chief 5-1-5, a 2009 Ford Expedition assigned to Engine 5. This vehicle serves as a command unit and is an essential part of the Special Operations team. The photo was taken by Larry Shapiro. Next, we feature one of four POD storage units used by the Chicago Fire Department Special Operations. These units are designed for rapid deployment and provide mobile support during emergencies. Another image shows a Komatsu forklift, labeled with shop ID #S-053. This heavy-duty machine is vital for moving large equipment and supplies around the facility. A 2008 Bobcat unit, marked with shop ID #S-119, is also in regular use. These compact machines are ideal for navigating tight spaces and performing a variety of tasks on site. Two 2004 Cub Cadet units are maintained by the Special Operations team. One is a mini pumper (ID #S-097), while the other is a utility model (ID #S-087). A second pair of Cub Cadets, both utility units (IDs #S-100 and #S-096), are also in service. These versatile machines are often used for landscaping, clearing debris, and other ground support tasks. Other equipment not captured in photos includes two Wave Runner jet skis, a John Boat, and a large portable pump unit—each playing a unique role in emergency response scenarios.
