Coil of Duty: Decoding a Carrier® Chilled Water Coil Model 28NC
Understanding coil model numbers might be part of the job, but it shouldn’t feel like a puzzle. In this article, we’ll break down the Carrier Chilled Water Coil model 28NC, specifically the upper coil model 28NC2022FGA207AL, to help you decode it with confidence.
The 28NC chilled water coil is commonly found in Carrier 39N and 39T air handlers. Knowing how to read these model numbers can save time when quoting or replacing coils. Let’s take a closer look at what each part of the model number means:
28NC-2-0-22-F-G-A-207-A-L
The “28NC†indicates that this is a chilled water coil. The next digit, “2â€, tells us the coil is in a vertical position and has no coating. If there were a letter instead, it would mean a baked phenolic coating, such as Heresite® or another protective finish.
The “0†following the “2†represents the number of rows in the coil. A “0†means it's a 10-row coil, while other digits (like 4, 6, or 8) indicate different row counts.
The next two digits, “22â€, show the number of tubes in the face of the coil. This helps determine the finned height. For example, a 22-tube coil typically has a finned height of 27.5 inches. Always double-check the actual measurement, as some coils may use 5/8-inch tubes instead of the standard ½-inch.
The “F†stands for full circuiting, meaning all tubes are connected to both the supply and return headers. Other options include H (half) or D (double).
The “G†provides key details about the coil: fin material (copper or aluminum), casing material (galvanized or stainless steel), and fins per inch (ranging from 8 to 14). In this case, “G†means copper fins with 8 fins per inch and a stainless steel casing.
The “A†refers to the tube wall thickness, which is typically 0.017 inches. Some models may have thicker walls depending on the application.
The three digits “207†represent the finned length in centimeters. Converting this to inches gives us approximately 81.5 inches.
The next “A†indicates the type of connection—here, it’s a steel MPT (male pipe thread) connection. Always confirm the size by measuring the actual fitting.
Finally, the “L†denotes left-hand airflow. An “R†would mean right-hand airflow.
As you can see, there are countless combinations when it comes to Carrier chilled water coils. If you're ever unsure about a model number or need help decoding one, don't hesitate to reach out to HVAC professionals who can guide you through the process.
