Indoor Cycling Etiquette: Rules of the Bike Room

Indoor cycling is a fantastic way to stay active, and there are several ways to enjoy it. You can choose to buy a bike for home use, join a local gym, or even attend a spinning class for an immersive experience. While training at home offers flexibility, participating in a spin class comes with its own set of unspoken rules. As an indoor cycling instructor, I’ve seen many new participants struggle with these norms. In this article, I’ll share the dos and don’ts of being in a spin room to help you be a respectful and considerate rider. From my years of teaching and attending classes, I've noticed that while most people are well-meaning, some actions can unintentionally disrupt the flow of the session. It’s important to be mindful of others and follow basic etiquette to ensure everyone has a great time. Let’s go over what to avoid in a spin class. First, if you’re not booked, always give up your bike when someone who has reserved it arrives. Many studios require reservations, and skipping the booking process can be frustrating for others. Second, don’t be picky about which bike you ride. It's not fair to ask others to move just because you prefer a certain machine. Everyone should feel welcome on any bike. Arriving late can also be disruptive. Class instructors often plan the session in advance, and showing up late breaks the rhythm. Similarly, talking during the class is distracting and disrespectful to both the instructor and other riders. Finally, always clean your bike after use. Studios usually provide cleaning supplies, and it's a small but meaningful gesture that shows respect for the next person. Lastly, remember to respect all riders, regardless of their fitness level or how they perform. Everyone is there for a reason, and it's important to support each other. Indoor cycling is more than just exercise—it's a community. By following these simple guidelines, you'll contribute to a positive and enjoyable environment for everyone. I hope this guide helps you have a better experience in your next spin class. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rider, being mindful of others makes a big difference. Thanks for reading!
