The incident resulted in one worker fatality and left several others injured. Emergency services were quickly mobilized, with an EMS Box Alarm dispatched to bring in additional ambulances from nearby towns such as Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Palatine, and Prospect Heights to assist with the response.
The blast caused significant damage, including rocks from the building’s roof being thrown into a nearby parking lot, damaging around 20 vehicles. Despite the severity of the explosion, officials confirmed that the chemical fumes released did not pose a risk to residents in the surrounding area. However, the blast created a tense and chaotic scene at the site, with emergency crews working swiftly to assess the situation and provide care.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the explosion occurred inside a machine that used a diluted form of potassium hydroxide, a substance known to be potentially hazardous when mixed with water or other materials. Fire Chief Glenn Ericksen stated that 10 people—seven employees and three police officers—were treated for respiratory issues, though none were reported to be in life-threatening condition.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after 9 a.m., finding the building filled with smoke and one employee already deceased. The company, which specializes in manufacturing parts for hybrid vehicles, is now under investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
