Providing high-quality catalyst for China's chemical industry

- Interview with Günter von Au, Chairman of the Management Board of Southern Chemicals
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Southern German Chemical Company. The company, a leading global specialty chemicals company specializing in catalysts and absorbents, was very ambitious in early September and announced that it will invest another 100 million euros in China to establish a new plant in the next three years to further promote the development of new plants. Expanding its existing business, South Chemical's sales in China will increase from 40 million euros in 2006 to 100 million euros in 2010. In the autumn of September, Southern Chemical China’s regional headquarters was also established in Shanghai. At the 13th China Chemical International Symposium held recently, the reporter interviewed Mr. Günter von Au, chairman of the company’s board of directors.
Mr. von Au is a Ph.D. in chemical engineering who has long been engaged in high-level management. When talking about the development strategy of Southern Chemistry in China, he said: “China is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies and it is an attractive market. The active participation of Southern Chemicals in the Chinese market is an important step in our strategy of occupying key global markets in its core area. This additional investment aims to expand the company's business in China."
German Southern Chemicals entered China in the 1970s, especially since its investment in the factory in 2002. It has grown rapidly and currently has six production plants and sales in China. In Panjin, Liaoning Province, Southern Chemical’s catalyst plant, which produces chemical fertilizers and syngas catalysts, has tripled its production within three years. At the Shanghai site, Southern Chemicals has developed and produced a new type of polymerization catalyst for polyolefins, which is in the global market. Sales; In terms of ammonia catalysts, Southern Chemicals achieved a breakthrough of zero and the number of customers increased rapidly. In the past three years, South China Chemical has achieved an annual growth rate of 20% in sales in China. In response, Dr. von Au said: "This shows that the demand in the Chinese market is consistent with the development of Southern Chemicals. We have succeeded in promoting the development of the Chinese market with high-quality products and services."
At the China Chemical International Symposium, Dr. von Au's speech on coal oil and coal chemical catalysts was attended by delegates. Dr. von Au introduced the development plan of the company's new coal chemical catalyst business in China. He said that the world has entered the post-oil era and needs to develop new energy sources. South China Chemical has the world's leading natural gas synthetic oil and key catalyst technology for coal-based synthetic oil. This high value-added catalyst is mainly used to convert coal into fuel and Chemicals can also be used for the conversion of natural gas and bioenergy. China is a big coal resource country, and it is accelerating the development of coal to oil, coal to olefins, and coal to methanol. Southern Chemical and its partner Lurgi have jointly participated in the supply of catalysts for China's large-scale coal-to-methanol and methanol-to-propylene projects. Plans to establish a new catalyst factory in China.
Dr. von Au added: “In the past few years, we have provided various advanced high-performance catalysts and technical services to Sinopec and chemical companies. The application of Southern Chemical's catalysts in certain fields has reached over 60% in the domestic market. ”
The reason why Dr. von Au, who established the Southern China Regional Headquarters in Shanghai, explained that the establishment of the China regional headquarters is to effectively grasp the huge potential of the Chinese chemical market and adapt to the company's need to rapidly expand its business in the Chinese market. The holding company and the regional headquarters merge all Chinese businesses, which is conducive to optimizing the management and ensuring the investment benefits.
Regarding the strategic development of South Chemicals in China in the future, Dr. von Au said that in order to realize the development goals of Southern Chemical in China in 2010, Southern Chemicals will focus on the development of the catalyst business for coal-based alternative fuels and chemicals; meanwhile, it will actively develop adsorbents and The additive business will build a new plant for pharmaceutical packaging near Shanghai and plan to put it into production in 2008; build a new bentonite deep-processing plant to supply raw materials for the construction, foundry and paper industries, making Southern Chemicals China's largest supplier of catalysts and bentonites. One; actively expand related businesses for exhaust gas purification, wastewater treatment and new battery materials. The ultimate goal of Southern Chemicals is to meet China's need to protect resources and environment for modern science and technology and contribute to the sustainable development of China's economy.
