October 14, 2020 — A recent video showcases how Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (KWO) improved safety during the construction of a dam in Grimsel Pass, Switzerland, by using Flyability’s Elios 2 drone. The footage highlights how the team used this innovative technology to avoid dangerous manual inspections and ensure worker safety.
In the video, KWO engineers explain how they utilized the Elios 2 to collect visual data from a deep pit before installing an elevator. This approach eliminated the need for workers to descend into the pit manually, which would have involved risky rope access or crane operations. Instead, the Elios 2 safely flew inside the pit, capturing high-quality images that allowed the team to assess the site without exposing personnel to potential hazards.
The project took place in Grimsel Pass, a remote area in the Bernese Alps at an elevation of nearly 2,000 meters. Due to harsh winter conditions, the road is closed from October to May, limiting construction work to the summer months. This made efficiency and safety even more critical.
The Elios 2’s unique design features a protective cage that allows it to collide with obstacles and continue flying, making it ideal for confined spaces like the pit. This capability enabled the KWO team to inspect areas that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach with traditional methods.
Pascal Reber, KWO’s Civil Engineering Site Manager, shared his experience: “The Elios 2 delivered excellent results, allowing us to plan future projects with confidence in our crew's safety. It not only saved time but also provided greater flexibility in how we conducted the inspection.â€
He added, “A manual inspection would have taken 3–4 people a full week, but with the Elios 2, we completed the same task in just two hours. Plus, we could start from the bottom of the pit and fly directly to the areas we needed to check, collecting detailed data that we could easily share with the rest of the team.â€
This case demonstrates how drones like the Elios 2 are revolutionizing industrial inspections, especially in challenging environments. By reducing risks and improving efficiency, such technologies are becoming essential tools for companies working in remote or hazardous locations.
