Box Alarm in Des Plaines, 2-14-21

A fire broke out late at night in the cooking ventilation system and rooftop exhaust fans of Hugo’s Frog Bar, located inside the Rivers Casino. The incident occurred just after 10 p.m., and it was caused by accumulated grease that ignited in the hood and duct system. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the Des Plaines Fire Department managed to bring the fire under control and fully extinguish it by just after 11 p.m. The fire damage was limited to the kitchen hood, ductwork, and part of the roof, with only minor water damage in other areas of the building. One guest who had been evacuated sought medical attention and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for a non-life-threatening issue. Although the casino reopened early on Monday, Hugo’s Frog Bar remained closed for further inspection and repairs. Under Illinois' current COVID-19 guidelines, casinos are allowed to operate 24 hours a day but must limit their capacity to 50% of total occupancy.
