Excerpts from roster.com:
Cody Drummer couldn’t recall most of the people who saved his life after he was pinned under a garbage truck last November, but he still felt an overwhelming need to meet and thank them. Recently, that wish came true.
The moment took place at Cherry Valley Fire Protection District Station 2 in Rockford, where Cody, along with his family, had initially thought they were heading for lunch. Instead, they pulled into the fire station parking lot. As he was helped from the back seat into a wheelchair, a group of about a dozen local firefighters and paramedics stood ready to greet him.
He shook each of their hands, expressing deep gratitude for their lifesaving efforts. "I just wanted to say thank you," he said. "You didn’t have to do this, but you did because you care."
Cody, a resident of Rockford, was joined by his mother and his wife, Cassidy, who has been by his side for the past nine months. The couple is expecting their first child, a daughter, in June. "In those early days after the accident, I sat by his bed praying that we'd get a chance like this," Cassidy shared, fighting back tears. "It means everything to us. These people will always be part of our lives."
"This means my baby will have a dad," she added. "I’m so grateful."
The incident happened on November 9 when Cody was driving a garbage truck on Baxter Road. A pickup truck swerved into his lane, causing a collision that pushed Cody’s truck onto its side. While the other passenger was unharmed, Cody became trapped underneath the vehicle. A Maggio’s tow truck helped lift some of the weight, and Cherry Valley firefighters spent over an hour cutting him free. He was then airlifted to the hospital by LifeFlight, with assistance from Cherry Valley, New Milford, and Stillman Valley fire departments.
During the visit, Cody was wheeled around the fire station to express his thanks. Before arriving, a LifeFlight helicopter similar to the one that rescued him landed in the parking lot, giving him a chance to see it up close.
Among those he met was Steve Reuss, a firefighter and paramedic with Cherry Valley who was the first to respond to the scene. Reuss also transported the driver of the other vehicle to the hospital. According to reports, the driver had a medical condition that caused the crash, and he is currently recovering.
Reuss said this was only the second time in his 20-year career that he had the opportunity to reconnect with someone he helped save. "It's really nice," he said. "After doing this for so long, you don't often get to see how people are doing. With all the privacy rules now, it's hard to follow up. You only hear about them through the news or obituaries."
Lt. Lane Person from the Stillman Valley Fire Department was also at the scene of the accident. He works for a private ambulance company in Loves Park and has been helping Cody with his medical appointments in Rockford and Madison, Wisconsin.
"I feel great," he said. "It makes me even more grateful to be here with my family and to keep doing what I love."
