Excerpts from roster.com:
Cody Drummer couldn’t remember most of the people who saved his life after he was pinned under a garbage truck last November, but he still wanted to meet and thank them. And recently, he finally had that chance.
The event took place at Cherry Valley Fire Protection District Station 2 in Rockford. Cody was with his family, expecting a casual lunch, but instead, they pulled into the fire station parking lot. As he was helped from the back seat into a wheelchair, about a dozen local firefighters and paramedics were waiting for him. It was a moment of deep gratitude and emotion.
Cody shook hands with each of them, expressing his heartfelt thanks for their lifesaving efforts. He was joined by his mother and his wife, Cassidy, who have been by his side through the entire recovery process. The couple is expecting their first child, a baby girl, in June.
“In the days following Cody’s accident, I often sat by his bed, praying that we’d get this opportunity,†Cassidy said, fighting back tears. “It means everything to us. These people will always be in our hearts.â€
Cassidy added, “This means my baby will have a dad. I’m just so grateful.â€
The incident happened on November 9 when Cody was driving a garbage truck along Baxter Road. A pickup truck crossed into his lane and collided with his vehicle, pushing it onto its side. While the other passenger was unharmed, Cody became trapped underneath the truck. A Maggio’s tow truck helped lift some of the weight, and Cherry Valley firefighters spent nearly an hour cutting him free. He was then airlifted to the hospital by LifeFlight. Fire departments from Cherry Valley, New Milford, and Stillman Valley all responded to the scene.
“I just wanted to thank them,†Cody said. “They didn’t sign up for this job because they wanted to. They do it because they care about saving people. They’re true heroes.â€
Despite still being in a leg splint and neck brace, Cody was wheeled around the fire station so he could express his thanks in person. Before he arrived, a LifeFlight helicopter similar to the one that rescued him landed in the parking lot, allowing him to see the aircraft up close.
Among those he met was Steve Reuss, a firefighter and paramedic from Cherry Valley. He was the first to speak with Cody after the crash and later transported the driver of the other vehicle to the hospital. According to reports, the driver suffered a medical condition that caused the collision. He is currently recovering from his injuries.
Reuss said this was only the second time in 20 years that he’s been able to reconnect with someone he helped save. “It’s really nice,†he said. “After doing this for so long, you don’t often get to see how things turn out. With all the privacy rules now, it’s hard to follow up. You rarely hear how they’re doing unless you read about it in the paper or in an obituary.â€
Lt. Lane Person from the Stillman Valley Fire Department was also at the scene. He works for a private ambulance company in Loves Park and has been helping transport Cody to his medical appointments in Rockford and Madison, Wisconsin.
“I feel great,†he said. “I’m so thankful for this moment, and it makes me even more grateful to be here with my family.â€
