Robotic EV Charging Is Being Tested in Texas

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, a groundbreaking EV charging robot named ZiGGY is currently being tested this summer. This innovative technology is designed to serve both travelers and airport staff who drive electric vehicles. The robot can be summoned to a car parked in the airport's lot, where it will autonomously charge the vehicle before returning to its base. ZiGGY, developed by Los Angeles-based EV Safe Charge, is a pioneering solution in flexible EV charging. The company specializes in temporary charging systems for major automotive brands like Jaguar, Porsche, Stellantis, Nissan, Audi, Daimler, and Harley-Davidson. DFW Airport selected EV Safe Charge for its demonstration program, which aims to showcase advanced EV charging technologies from May to August. In a video demonstrating the process, a driver books ZiGGY remotely. The robot then locates an available parking spot, parks itself, and alerts the driver. When the car arrives, ZiGGY moves aside, positions itself behind the vehicle, and begins charging. After the session, it returns to its station to recharge itself. According to Caradoc Ehrenhalt, founder and CEO of EV Safe Charge, DFW chose ZiGGY for its ability to reach every vehicle in a parking lot, rather than just a limited number of spots. This flexibility could help solve the common problem of "ICEing," where gas-powered cars block EV charging spaces. As mobile charging becomes more widespread, such innovations could significantly improve the convenience and accessibility of EV charging for drivers everywhere.
