Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:
A firefighter narrowly escaped serious injury after falling through a collapsing staircase while responding to a house fire in the West Englewood neighborhood on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on the South Side, when a "mayday" was called for a home located at 6900 South Paulina.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, the firefighter was backing down the staircase as it gave way, allowing him to slow his fall and eventually climb out unharmed. He did not require any medical attention, and officials confirmed that all personnel involved were accounted for and safe.
In addition to the firefighter’s incident, there were reports of one civilian who was initially unaccounted for, possibly a squatter. Search efforts were underway, but no injuries were reported, and the situation was ultimately declared secure.
