On the morning of December 22, 2021, Des Plaines Ambulance 61 and North Maine Fire Protection District Engine 1 were called to 51 N. East River Road after a report of difficulty breathing. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire coming from the first-floor living room of a three-unit split-level home. They immediately declared it a working fire and began suppression efforts. Before the first hose line was deployed, the ambulance crew entered the building and successfully rescued a resident from a second-floor bedroom that was already filling with smoke. The incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm to bring in additional resources. Fortunately, the fire was fully extinguished before all responding units arrived, and it remained contained to the original unit of origin. Emergency responders worked quickly to ensure the safety of all occupants and prevent further spread. No injuries were reported, but the damage inside the home was significant. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
