September 11, 2020 – A groundbreaking video from Swisscom Ventures showcases an extraordinary research mission supported by Moncler, where Flyability’s Elios drone was used to explore the deepest ice caves in the world.
Today, in collaboration with Swisscom, Flyability unveiled a compelling video that demonstrates how its indoor drone technology was deployed by a team of researchers to investigate some of the most remote and challenging ice caves in Greenland. This expedition aimed to better understand the effects of climate change on the melting ice by studying underground water flow systems.
The two-week expedition took place in 2018 on the Greenland ice sheet, one of the largest ice bodies on Earth. Researchers focused on an area approximately 80 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq, where they sought to study the movement of water deep beneath the surface to gain insights into how climate change is affecting the ice sheets.
Previously, scientists could only descend about 130 meters into the vertical ice shafts—known as moulins—that lead to underground rivers. This time, they used the Elios, Flyability’s collision-tolerant drone, to reach the very bottom of these moulins and gather critical data on water movement and the structure of the ice walls.
“Exploring a moulin that extends 300 meters deep is extremely risky, especially when conditions at the bottom are unknown,†says Geoffroy le Pivain, Flyability’s Product Manager, who helped coordinate the mission. “The Elios offers a safe and effective solution for reaching these hard-to-access areas, thanks to its unique design and advanced features for navigating tight spaces.â€
The expedition was led by Francesco Sauro, a professor at the University of Bologna specializing in planetary geology and exploration. He was joined by a multidisciplinary team of experts, including glaciologists, speleologists, biologists, and Arctic explorers, all working together to uncover new insights into the dynamics of the ice sheet.
In the same region of Greenland, French speleologist Janot Lamberton set a record in 1996 by descending 202 meters into an ice cave. However, due to increasing instability caused by climate change, such deep descents have become too dangerous. The Elios allowed researchers to safely reach the bottom of a moulin and discover a subglacial lake, a significant finding that could help improve our understanding of the ice sheet’s behavior.
“At Flyability, we’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,†says Adrien Briod, Co-Founder and CTO of Flyability. “While our primary goal is to create safer inspection tools for industrial use, we’re also excited to support scientific exploration in places that were once unreachable. The Greenland mission is a perfect example of that vision.â€
