Flyability’s Elios Used to Explore Some of the Deepest Ice Caves in the World

September 11, 2020 – A groundbreaking video from Swisscom Ventures highlights an extraordinary expedition supported by Moncler, where researchers used Flyability’s Elios drone to explore the deepest ice caves in Greenland.

Swisscom and Flyability recently released a compelling video showcasing how indoor drone technology was employed by a team of scientists to explore some of the most extreme environments on Earth—deep ice caves in Greenland. This mission, funded by fashion giant Moncler, aimed to study the impact of climate change on glacial systems using advanced drone technology.

The two-week expedition took place in 2018 on the vast Greenland ice sheet, one of the largest ice bodies on the planet. Researchers focused on an area about 80 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq, where they aimed to understand how water moves beneath the ice—a key factor in predicting the effects of global warming on glaciers.

Previously, scientists could only descend about 130 meters into the vertical ice shafts, known as moulins. But with the help of the Elios drone, which is designed for collision-tolerant flight in tight spaces, they were able to reach the very bottom of these moulins and gather critical data about their structure and the flow of subglacial water.

“Entering a moulin that goes 300 meters deep is extremely risky,” said Geoffroy le Pivain, Flyability’s Product Manager. “The Elios allowed us to safely explore areas that were previously inaccessible, giving researchers valuable insights without putting people in danger.”

The mission was led by Francesco Sauro, a professor at the University of Bologna, who worked alongside a multidisciplinary team of geologists, glaciologists, and explorers. The expedition not only provided scientific value but also demonstrated the potential of drones in extreme environments.

In the same region, French speleologist Janot Lamberton once set a record by descending 202 meters into an ice cave in 1996. However, due to changing climate conditions, such deep descents have become too dangerous in recent years. With the Elios, the team was able to reach the base of a moulin and even discover a subglacial lake—an important finding for future research.

“At Flyability, we believe in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” said Adrien Briod, Co-Founder and CTO. “Our drones aren’t just tools for inspections—they’re a way to explore places that were once out of reach and help expand human knowledge.”
