On the morning of December 22, 2021, Des Plaines Ambulance 61 and North Maine Fire Protection District Engine 1 responded to a reported medical emergency at 51 N. East River Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire coming from the first-floor living room of a three-unit split-level home. The situation was quickly identified as a working fire, prompting immediate action.
The ambulance crew entered the structure before the first hose line was deployed and successfully rescued a resident from a second-floor bedroom that was already filling with smoke. Recognizing the need for additional resources, the incident was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, calling in more units to assist.
Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the blaze, and by the time all responding companies arrived, the fire had already been extinguished. Fortunately, the fire remained confined to the unit of origin, preventing further damage. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Photos from the scene show the aftermath of the incident, capturing the intensity of the fire and the efforts made by emergency responders to protect lives and property. The community remains grateful for the quick response and professionalism displayed by the first responders during this critical moment.
