U.S. or sanctions on Chinese parts

On June 15, 2012, a high-ranking US trade department official said that he was considering taking action to punish auto parts imported from China and strictly examined other issues concerning Sino-US auto trade.

Tim Reif, general counsel of USTR (The Office of the United States Trade Representative), told reporters on the sanctions against Chinese auto parts: “We are examining a series of bilateral relations issues, including disputes in the automotive sector. At the research stage, there is no more relevant content to report on. However, we are indeed studying these topics and are also investigating matters relating to the automotive industry."

Earlier this year, the U.S. steel trade union and related organizations began pressing President Barack Obama at the onset of the election, demanding that the "torrents" of auto parts imported from China be blocked. These organizations urged Obama to sue the WTO to the WTO, or to initiate an anti-dumping/subsidy investigation against China's auto parts.

Since then, 188 lawmakers have written to Obama collectively, accusing China of adopting various subsidy policies, resulting in an unfair trade advantage and renewing demands for sanctions on Chinese auto parts and components. A large proportion of these members of the National Assembly are from large industrial areas in the Midwest, such as Ohio and Michigan. They play an important role in Obama’s November election.

Regarding the current intention of sanctioning Chinese auto parts, Livf emphasized that all actions will be based on "a careful examination of the actual situation" and not to help Obama win the votes.

The explanation stated: "As we all know, the preparation time of these cases is likely to reach several months or even several years. Therefore, when you see us requesting the WTO, this decision is not the last two or two months. under."
