At around 3:15 AM, Wheeling firefighters responded to a call about smoke coming from an apartment on Lexington Court. Upon arrival, they discovered that the outdoor electric utility box was fully engulfed in flames. While waiting for ComEd to arrive and de-energize the power, crews stretched their hoses and evacuated the building to ensure resident safety.
After about an hour on the scene, the power was successfully cut off. Firefighters then used water followed by foam to fully extinguish the fire. Once the area was secure, power was rerouted, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
The incident highlights the quick response and coordination between local emergency services and utility providers. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and prompt action in preventing larger incidents.
