NASA Black Technologies tracks firefighters in indoor fire

Although firefighters already have high-tech equipment such as fire-fighting suits made of thermal imaging masks and heat-resistant fire-retardant fabrics, how to track the exact location of firefighters in a complex structure of a smoke-blown fire building remains a problem to be solved . NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently developed an electromagnetic tracking device intended to allow firefighters into the complex structure of the fire in the rescue, the whereabouts of the track can be tracked in real time, thereby reducing the probability of accidents.

Known as POINTER, this device is designed for precise outdoor, indoor navigation and tracking of emergency responders. Unlike most previous studies focusing on radio wave technology, the study conceived the use of quasi-static electromagnetic fields. Although it has a short transmission distance, it also has its own advantages, making it better suited for use inside or under complex building structures. Unlike radio waves, the size and wavelength of a quasi-static electromagnetic field can not only be adjusted, but also can not be bounced back or lost in the face of a wall or in an underground environment. It also allows it to be deployed in a variety of environments, from open spaces to skyscrapers to underground warehouses.

The team is currently further developing the technology in the hope of reducing the existing shoebox-sized device to a portable device that will allow firefighters to put their pockets or buckles in the future.
