China's first self-designed gas hydrate comprehensive survey vessel was built in Wushu

In a significant milestone for China's marine research capabilities, the construction of the country's first comprehensive natural gas hydrate survey vessel officially began at Wuchang Shipyard. The event was marked by a ceremonial ignition led by Wang Xuelong, deputy director of the China Geodetic Bureau. As the blue arc lit up on the lathe, it symbolized the start of a new era in China’s marine geological exploration. This development signals that China is now entering the international forefront in oceanographic survey technology. The survey ship was approved and funded by the state, with the Guangzhou Ocean Geodetic Bureau taking the lead in its design and construction. Wang Min, vice director of the Ministry of Land and Resources and head of the China Land Transfer Bureau, chaired the shipbuilding leadership group. Attendees included Ma Shenda, deputy director of the Guangzhou Ocean Land Transfer Bureau, along with representatives from the Ministry of Planning and other relevant departments. This vessel is a groundbreaking project, as it is the first fully designed, built, and equipped comprehensive geophysical and geological survey ship developed entirely within China. It combines multiple functions, including seismic operations and geological surveys, and will be outfitted with advanced systems such as deep-sea remote sensing, high-resolution seismic surveys, and deep-sea sampling analysis. With high integration, automation, and versatility, it is capable of conducting multi-disciplinary and multi-integrated marine surveys. With a full-load displacement of 4,500 tons, the ship is designed to operate in all international waters. Its primary mission will focus on the exploration of submarine natural gas hydrates, while also supporting broader marine geological and mineral resource investigations. The vessel is expected to be completed and delivered by the end of 2008, significantly enhancing China's ability to explore and manage its marine resources. Currently, the Guangzhou Ocean Geodetic Bureau operates four survey vessels, which have played a crucial role in various marine research initiatives, including oil and gas resource surveys, gas hydrate exploration, oceanic scientific studies, Antarctic expeditions, and marine engineering geological assessments. This new vessel is set to further strengthen China's position in marine science and resource exploration.
