China's first self-designed gas hydrate comprehensive survey vessel was built in Wushu

In a significant milestone for China's marine geoscience, the construction of the country's first comprehensive natural gas hydrate survey vessel officially began at Wuchang Shipyard. The event was marked by the ignition of the ship’s main engine, symbolized by the deputy director of the China Geodetic Bureau, Wang Xuelong, who pressed the start button. As the blue arc lit up on the lathe, it signaled the beginning of a new era in China's marine geological exploration capabilities, positioning the nation among the global leaders in this field. The project was approved by the state and organized by the Guangzhou Oceanic Geodetic Bureau. Wang Min, deputy director of the Ministry of Land and Resources and head of the China Land Transfer Bureau, led the shipbuilding committee. Representatives from the Guangzhou Oceanic Geodetic Bureau, including Ma Shenda, as well as officials from the Ministry of Planning, were present at the ceremony. This vessel is the first of its kind in China, designed, built, and fully equipped domestically. It combines multiple functions, including seismic operations and geological surveys, marking a breakthrough in integrated marine research. The ship will be equipped with advanced systems such as deep-sea remote sensing, deep-sea sampling and analysis tools, and high-resolution seismic survey equipment. Its high level of integration, automation, and versatility make it suitable for multi-disciplinary marine investigations. With a full-load displacement of 4,500 tons, the vessel is capable of operating in all international waters. Once completed, it will play a key role in the survey of submarine natural gas hydrates, while also supporting other marine geological and mineral resource studies. The Guangzhou Oceanic Geodetic Bureau currently operates four survey vessels, which have contributed significantly to China’s marine oil and gas exploration, gas hydrate surveys, oceanographic research, Antarctic expeditions, and marine engineering projects. This new vessel is expected to be delivered by the end of 2008, further enhancing China’s ability to explore and develop marine resources, especially in the critical area of natural gas hydrates.
