The modern Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) is a computerized, multi-functional radar system designed for automatic processing of radar information. It can automatically track targets within a range of 0.4 to 59 kilometers. Whether in automatic or manual mode, it can detect between 10 to 25 targets simultaneously, combining their motion parameters with the ship’s own movement data. This information is then displayed on the terminal screen, providing the captain and helmsman with clear visual representations of key navigation and collision avoidance parameters, enabling better decision-making.
The Card Navigation System has an effective navigation range of up to 463 kilometers. Over 40 such systems are currently deployed worldwide, with about half located in Nordic waters. Since the 1980s, the Taiwan Card System has undergone significant technological upgrades, including miniaturization, digitization, and structural simplification. These improvements have significantly enhanced its performance, making it an essential tool for modern ship navigation.
