High oil prices have once again brought attention to alternative fuels like methanol and ethanol. In recent years, delegations from Shanxi Province—home to China's leading methanol fuel technology—and Henan Province, known for its advanced ethanol fuel technology, have been receiving numerous visits. These delegations, often led by government officials and representatives from key sectors, are eager to learn about the development and implementation of alternative fuel solutions.
According to the Shanxi Provincial Office of Methanol Fuels and Methanol Automobiles, coal chemical companies from Henan, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Daqing have recently visited Shanxi to inspect methanol fuel and methanol-powered vehicles. Since September, Anhui’s Chery Automobile Co. has also sent a delegation to the province. On September 5, a group from Ordos City in Inner Mongolia, led by the city’s mayor, was welcomed. Shi Lei, head of the office, revealed that after the inspection, Chery reached an agreement with the provincial government to develop an economical methanol car, which will be promoted first in Shanxi.
Wang Dongwei, director of Ordos City’s Economic Commission, explained that fluctuating oil prices have pushed the city to act quickly in exploring alternative energy sources. Shanxi was one of the first provinces to pilot methanol-gasoline-coal-methanol low-grade blends (M15) as an alternative to regular gasoline. The province has consistently led the nation in methanol fuel technology and testing, which is why many cities are making special trips to learn from its experience.
The reporter learned that this year, Henan Province has hosted visits from six provinces and cities, including Shandong, Jiangsu, Hunan, Hebei, Hubei, and Qingdao, as well as the Asian Clean Energy Association from Singapore. Each delegation was accompanied by officials from the Development and Reform Commission, industry and commerce, taxation, environmental protection, and legal affairs departments. Their main goal was to understand how Henan has successfully promoted ethanol fuel and ethanol vehicles.
Henan was the first province in the country to trial ethanol gasoline, and after four years of testing, it was fully rolled out nationwide by December last year. With support from national authorities, sales of ethanol vehicles have steadily increased. Except for a few remote gas stations, the province now largely uses ethanol gasoline. In July, daily sales reached 5,633 tons, breaking 170,000 tons for the month, with market coverage exceeding 90%. Consumers have widely accepted ethanol gasoline, showing strong public confidence in the product.
The report also noted that Anhui, which sent a delegation to Henan last year, has since begun promoting ethanol vehicles within the province. Additionally, seven cities in Shijiazhuang and Shandong are set to introduce ethanol gasoline before the end of the year. As more regions look to reduce their reliance on traditional fuels, the success stories of Shanxi and Henan serve as important models for the future of alternative energy in China.
