High oil prices have once again brought attention to alternative fuels like methanol and ethanol. In recent years, delegations from Shanxi Province, a leader in methanol fuel technology in China, and Henan Province, which is at the forefront of ethanol fuel development, have been receiving numerous visits.
According to the Shanxi Provincial Office of Methanol Fuels and Methanol Automobiles, coal chemical companies from Henan, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Daqing have recently traveled to Shanxi to inspect methanol fuel and methanol vehicles. Since September, Anhui’s Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. sent a delegation to the province. On September 5, a group from Ordos City in Inner Mongolia, led by the mayor, also visited. Shi Lei, head of the office, told reporters that after the inspection, Chery reached an agreement with the provincial government to develop an economical methanol car and promote it first in Shanxi.
Wang Dongwei, director of Ordos City's Economic Commission, said that fluctuating oil prices have pushed the city to act quickly in developing alternative fuels. Shanxi was one of the first provinces to pilot methanol-gasoline-coal-methanol low-grade blended (M15) as an alternative to gasoline. It has long led the country in methanol fuel technology and testing. The visit was specifically arranged to learn more about these advancements.
According to the reporter’s understanding, this year, Henan Province welcomed delegations from six provinces and cities, including Shandong, Jiangsu, Hunan, Hebei, Hubei, and Qingdao, as well as the Asian Clean Energy Association from Singapore. All delegations were led by government officials, with representatives from the Development and Reform Commission, industry, commerce, taxation, environmental protection, and legal affairs offices accompanying them. Their main goal was to understand how ethanol fuel and ethanol vehicles are being promoted in Henan.
Henan was the first province in the country to begin trials with ethanol gasoline. After four years of testing, it was fully rolled out across the province on December 1 last year. With support from national authorities, sales of ethanol vehicles have steadily increased. Except for a few remote gas stations, most of the province now uses ethanol gasoline. In July, the average daily sales reached 5,633 tons, surpassing 170,000 tons for the month, with market coverage over 90%. Consumers have largely accepted and embraced ethanol gasoline.
The reporter also learned that Anhui Province, which sent a delegation to Henan last year, has now begun promoting ethanol vehicles within its borders. Additionally, seven cities in Shijiazhuang and Shandong Province plan to introduce ethanol gasoline before the end of this year.
