The Chicago Tribune recently published an article discussing a new contract for firefighters in Downers Grove, which outlines salary increases over the next three years. The agreement was approved by the village council on August 5 with a vote of 5-1, marking a significant step forward for the local fire department.
According to the terms of the contract, firefighters will receive base salary raises of 3% this year, followed by 2% in 2015 and 1% in 2016. These increments are applied across all experience levels, ensuring that every firefighter benefits from the raises regardless of their position or tenure. The union, led by President Rob Pekelder, overwhelmingly ratified the deal on July 24, representing 70 full-time members including firefighters, paramedics, engineers, lieutenants, captains, and the director of emergency medical services.
For example, a starting firefighter/paramedic will now earn $65,701, up from $63,787 last year. By 2016, this amount is expected to increase to $67,685. However, as firefighters progress through the seven pay steps based on their years of service, their actual raises can be much higher. A firefighter with two years of experience will earn $73,439 this year, rising to $79,196 in 2015—a 7.8% increase. Similarly, those with four years of experience will see their salaries grow from $79,337 to $81,717 this year, and $84,098 to $86,621 for paramedics.
In addition to these annual increases, all union members who reach the top of their salary range will be eligible for one-time bonuses between $750 and $1,500 during the contract’s term, depending on their experience level. The contract also includes a provision prohibiting any form of strike, reinforcing the commitment to peaceful labor relations.
Commissioner Bob Barnett, who voted against the agreement, expressed concerns about the long-term financial implications. He criticized the lack of flexibility in the contract, stating that if the economy were to decline, the only option would be to reduce staff. His opposition aligns with his previous stance against similar agreements for other municipal workers.
The contract was backdated to May, meaning that firefighters will receive a lump sum payment for the 3% raise they would have earned over the past three months. Future raises will take effect in May each year, ensuring consistent salary growth for the department.
Thanks, Dan.
