OMRON introduces safety grating with position detection temporary failure function

Omron has launched a new safety grating model, the "F35J-A Ver.2," featuring a temporary muting function. This innovative feature allows the grating to be temporarily disabled when the workpiece and stage pass through the detection zone. The updated model also includes two key enhancements: (1) temporary position detection and (2) partial failure functionality. The product is priced between 52,000 and 560,000 yen (excluding tax). The first enhancement enables the system to detect whether the machine tool or robot, which may pose a risk, is in a safe position or has stopped running. It uses limit switches and sensors to verify this, and if the equipment is in a safe state, the grating can be temporarily deactivated. Previously, temporary muting was often triggered by detecting the presence of a workpiece or a person. However, this could lead to uncertainty—especially when an operator mounts a workpiece but doesn’t start the machining process. With the new features, the grating can now safely operate even in environments where operators need to load parts manually. The second enhancement allows only part of the optical axis to be disabled during the temporary muting period. Optical axes that are not involved in the workpiece’s movement remain active, enabling the system to detect any unexpected human entry during the process. This improves overall safety and reduces the risk of accidents. Additionally, the grating can distinguish between a “machine stop area” and a “warning area.” For example, if the grating is installed horizontally, it will first issue an alarm when an operator approaches a dangerous zone. If the danger persists, the machine will automatically shut down. This helps prevent false triggers caused by the grating's own motion. Another useful feature is the ability to deactivate certain optical axes that are permanently blocked due to fixed machinery within the detection area. Once multiple optical axes are blocked, the system can switch the output to a closed state, ensuring the device starts correctly without being hindered by false signals. To support the F35J-A Ver.2, Omron also introduced the software "F39-GWUM" and the portable control device "F39-MC21." The F39-GWUM connects to the grating via a dedicated interface cable, allowing users to configure functions, adjust parameters, and monitor the system’s status. It provides real-time visibility into light reception, detects external interference that might cause malfunctions, and displays detailed error logs. The F39-MC21, on the other hand, is ideal for settings where computers are unavailable or simple configuration is needed, making it perfect for workshops with limited resources. Together, these tools enhance usability and ensure smooth integration of the new safety grating into existing systems.
