The Horizon Frigate project was originally a joint procurement project for three countries to build a new generation of universal frigates for France, Italy and the United Kingdom. However, in the middle of 1999, the three countries had contradictions in demand, and the British withdrew from the Horizon frigate project and turned to build their own 45-type air defense destroyer.
France, Italy and Britain agreed to continue to develop the main air defense missile system and will be installed on the anti-aircraft ships of the three countries. However, France and Italy have reduced the number of purchases of "Horizon" class frigates from 4 and 6 to 2. Restricted by the receipt of funds, the French and Italian countries also turned to the development of the multi-purpose frigate FREMM project.
The first French "Horizon" class frigate "Forbin" was launched in March 2005 and is currently undergoing a sea trial.
Italy's two "Horizon" class frigates were built by Italy's return to Ancona Shipbuilding Company. The first "Andrea Doria" was launched in October 2005 and the second "Caio Duilio" is scheduled to be launched by the end of 2007.
