Barrington Countryside FPD … begins service

The Barrington-Courier Review recently published an article detailing the successful launch of the newly independent Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. Despite a long and emotionally charged period leading up to the separation from the village of Barrington, both the new district and the original fire department reported that the first week of operations ran smoothly. Scott Motisi, a battalion chief with the new district, noted that the transition has been very cohesive. “We created a program that brought in new members as well as those who moved over from the village,” he said. “It’s all about teamwork. Everyone has supported each other during training and by sharing their expertise.” Jeff Swanson, the district’s chief and administrator, mentioned that the area covered by the Countryside Fire Protection District—spanning 46 square miles—received around 50 calls for service in the first seven days. Meanwhile, the Barrington Fire Department, which serves a smaller 5-square-mile area, responded to 29 calls, according to Fire Chief James Arie. “It’s going really well,” Arie said. “The team has adjusted well to the new arrangement. There have been no major issues or problems so far.” Even with the harsh winter conditions that began on January 4 with heavy snow and continued through January 6 with extreme cold, neither department faced significant challenges during the first week. The most demanding day for the Countryside Fire Protection District came on January 8, when firefighters responded to 15 calls, including several related to burst pipes due to thawing. However, all incidents were managed without the need for outside assistance. Motisi, a former lieutenant with the Barrington Fire Department, emphasized that the new district is still adapting to the changes in local fire services. Since its formation, the district has received new equipment, including hydraulic-powered ambulance cots and a 3,000-gallon tanker. According to Motisi, the months of October and November were focused on orientation, and the current emphasis is on training. Firefighters have trained on breathing apparatuses, reviewed emergency response protocols, practiced search and rescue scenarios, and familiarized themselves with the layouts of local hospitals. Looking ahead, more changes are expected. The district is set to receive new ambulances and will hire six additional firefighter/paramedics. Arie also praised the smooth transition of the village department, noting that most of its 16 firefighters are already familiar with the community. The department operates with three shifts at the public safety building, each led by a shift commander. Like the new district, Arie said the team is motivated and ready to serve.
