Chicago 5-11 Alarm + 2 specials 1-22-13 (pt 4)

Media coverage of the 5-11 alarm fire that took place on January 22, 2013, at a warehouse in Bridgeport:

From the Chicago Tribune:

Firefighters were still working at the smoldering warehouse in Bridgeport this morning, dousing hot spots after a massive 5-11 alarm fire swept through the five-story building. About a third of the department's personnel were on the scene, battling the flames.

The fire was first spotted by a fire chief passing by the former Harris Marcus Group building at 3757 S. Ashland Ave. shortly after 9 p.m. As the fire spread quickly, extra alarms were called. The roof collapsed, and over 200 firefighters struggled with frozen hydrants and icy ladders. The blaze was finally under control around 12:30 a.m.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago described it as the largest fire in the city in seven years. “This was a huge fire with an unbelievable amount of fuel—wood, old materials, varnish,” he said. “Once it caught, it really ran.”

“Everything inside is wood, and the buildings look great from the outside. But when they catch fire like this, they come down fast,” Santiago added.

The cold weather made things even harder for the firefighters. “We had issues with ice weight on the buildings and ladders,” Santiago explained. “We had to call the Water Department to steam off our ladders.”

The incident required a 5-11 alarm with two special alarms to bring in additional equipment and personnel. This type of response is rare. A similar 5-11 with two special alarms was used in 2006 during the fire at the historic Wirt Dexter Building in the South Loop. That fire also caused major disruptions, including traffic congestion and CTA service interruptions.

Last year, there was another 5-11 alarm in the Avondale neighborhood, which burned for hours and involved about 200 firefighters—but no special alarms were called.

Alarms usually escalate one at a time, up to a fifth alarm. However, the incident commander skipped the fourth alarm after the fire spread to adjacent buildings.
