Lug-All Come Along Ratchet Winch Hoists are built with quality and precision in mind. These hoists are designed to last for years under regular use, thanks to their high-quality materials and durable construction. However, to ensure continued safe and effective performance, it's essential to conduct regular inspections and maintenance before each use.

Pre-Operational Inspection Checklist

Before using your Lug-All winch hoist, take a few minutes to complete this quick pre-operation inspection. If any part of the hoist is damaged or worn, do not use it and send it back to Lug-All for repair or replace parts through their online store.

  1. Check the hooks for cracks, deformation, or excessive wear.
  2. Ensure that the latches function properly and securely.
  3. Inspect the entire length of the web strap for fraying, melting, cuts, chemical damage, or abrasions.
  4. Examine the ratchet teeth for gouges, burrs, or other physical damage.
  5. Look for bent or broken metal components on the hoist frame.
  6. Check the pawls for bends, cracks, or other signs of damage.
  7. Verify the condition of the springs—make sure they are intact and functioning correctly.
  8. Test the u-frame operation to ensure the pawl engages the spring properly without missing.
  9. Test all operational functions: lifting, lowering, and free release.
  10. For web strap hoists, check the handle for a broken stress link. For wire rope models, inspect the handle for bending or deformation. A broken stress link or bent handle may indicate overloading.

How to Test Operation Modes

The Lug-All winch hoist has three main operating modes: tensioning, backing off, and free release. To test the tensioning mode, rotate the reverse lever toward the drum to engage the u-frame pawl with the ratchet teeth. Then turn the handle as needed to apply the correct tension.

To test the backing off mode, move the reverse lever away from the drum so the u-frame pawl disengages from the ratchet teeth. Move the handle until the pawl engages the main frame spring. Apply more pressure in the same direction to release the main frame pawl, and then let go to allow the load to lower gradually.

To test the free release mode, move the reverse lever away from the drum to disengage the u-frame pawl. Press the trigger to hold the main frame pawl away from the ratchet teeth, allowing the load to drop freely.

Maintenance Tips

Some degree of corrosion is normal for outdoor use. Lubricate moving parts like shafts with light lubricants such as WD-40, but avoid applying it directly to the web strap, as it can affect its dielectric properties and weaken the material. Regular maintenance ensures smooth operation and extends the life of your hoist.

Regular inspections help prevent unexpected failures and keep your equipment in top condition. Even the most well-built tools can fail if not maintained properly. Neglecting maintenance could lead to dangerous situations, especially during critical tasks. By following these steps, you protect both your equipment and your safety.
