Lug-All Pre-Operational Inspection Guide

Lug-All come-along ratchet winch hoists are built to last, using high-quality materials and precise engineering. These tools are designed to provide reliable performance over many years. However, to ensure their longevity and safe operation, it's essential to conduct regular inspections and maintenance before each use.
Pre-Operational Inspection Checklist
Before operating your Lug-All winch hoist, take a few minutes to complete this quick inspection. If any issues are found, the hoist should be taken out of service immediately. Damaged units can either be sent back to Lug-All for repair or have replacement parts ordered from their online store.
- Check the hooks for signs of bending, cracking, or excessive wear.
- Ensure that the latches move freely and engage properly.
- Inspect the entire length of the web strap for fraying, melting, chemical damage, or cuts on the edges or face of the material.
- Look at the ratchet teeth for any signs of damage such as gouges or burrs.
- Examine all metal components for bends, cracks, or breaks.
- Check the pawls for deformation, cracks, or other damage.
- Verify that the springs are intact and functioning correctly.
- Test the u-frame by ensuring the pawl engages the main frame spring properly without missing the contact point.
- Test the lifting, lowering, and free release functions to confirm smooth operation.
- For web strap hoists, check the handle for a broken stress link. For wire rope models, look for any bending or deformation. A broken link or bent handle may indicate the hoist has been overloaded.
Operation Testing
The Lug-All winch hoist offers three operational modes: tensioning, backing off, and free release. To test the tensioning function, move the reverse lever toward the drum to engage the u-frame pawl with the ratchet teeth. Then, turn the handle to apply the desired tension.
To test the backing off function, move the reverse lever away from the drum so the u-frame pawl disengages from the ratchet teeth. Move the handle until the u-frame pawl touches the main frame pawl spring. Applying pressure in the same direction will release the main frame pawl, allowing the load to descend one tooth at a time.
To test the free release mode, position the reverse lever away from the drum and press the trigger to hold the main frame pawl away from the ratchet teeth, enabling full release of the load.
Maintenance Tips
It's normal for some corrosion to occur, especially if the hoist is used outdoors. Lubricate moving parts like shafts with light lubricants such as WD-40, but avoid applying them directly to the web strap, as this can affect its dielectric properties and cause damage.
Regular inspections help prevent unexpected failures and keep your equipment running smoothly. Even the best products can suffer from poor maintenance, which could lead to breakdowns during critical tasks. While Lug-All includes safety features, neglecting routine checks can still pose a risk to your safety. Sticking to a maintenance schedule not only protects your investment but also ensures your personal safety during use.
