Recently, Kennedy/Jenks Consulting, a U.S.-based firm, has been honored with the Engineering Achievement Award by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) for their innovative wastewater treatment method. This breakthrough filtration system employs large-diameter filter media during high-velocity air recirculation, significantly enhancing filtration efficiency and reducing both operational and maintenance costs.
The technology is currently being tested at a major wastewater treatment plant in the Southern Bay area, where early results have exceeded expectations. Traditionally, wastewater treatment relies on dual-media granular filters made of anthracite and sand to remove solids. However, in this trial, a single-layer anthracite filter with particles 2.5 times larger than conventional media was used. The plant processes about 20 million gallons of wastewater daily, serving communities such as Menlo Park, Sequoia, and Portola Valley.
According to the research team, if these promising results are consistently validated, the adoption of this new single-media filter could revolutionize the industry by cutting down long-term expenses. This advancement not only improves performance but also offers a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for water treatment facilities across the country. The potential impact of this innovation could be significant, especially as water scarcity and environmental concerns continue to grow.
