Commercial fire and haz mat incident in Park Ridge, 7-17-19 (more)

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

The Park Ridge fire marshal issued a citation on Thursday for failing to notify the fire department about the storage of hazardous materials at a site before it caught fire. Firefighters responded to a major blaze that consumed a former Harvey’s Marathon gas station located at Northwest Highway and Oakton Street. The property owner was found not to have posted any warning signs or informed the fire department that 45 tons of calcium peroxide were stored inside and around the building. The violation came with a $500 fine.

The large quantity of calcium peroxide was intended for cleaning up soil contamination on the property, which had been used as a gas station for many years. The site had been vacant since approximately 2013. The city of Park Ridge identified the owner as Raza Holdings LLC.

The fire department classified calcium peroxide as a hazardous material that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, resulting in two firefighters sustaining minor burns. The Park Ridge Fire Department and other responding agencies are expected to seek reimbursement for equipment damage and labor costs. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Cleanup efforts continued on Friday, with oversight from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. A plastic-lined sand berm was installed on the property on Thursday, and cleanup was anticipated to continue through the weekend. While the IEPA does not regulate the storage of calcium peroxide, local municipal laws would apply. Any remaining material not destroyed in the fire cannot be used for the planned soil decontamination.
