Fire service loses a good friend, George Reichhardt

It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the passing of a beloved friend and dedicated member of the fire service community. George C. Reichhardt, a retired captain from the Fermilab Fire Department and a long-time volunteer with the East Joliet Fire Protection District, was more than just a firefighter—he was a passionate historian, photographer, and lifelong enthusiast of fire apparatus and equipment. George devoted many years to capturing the history of fire departments across the region through his photography. His work not only preserved the legacy of vintage fire trucks but also brought together fellow enthusiasts who shared his love for the fire service. He was an active member of several organizations, including Fire Buffs of Illinois, HOIFEC, SPAAMFAA, the International Fire Photographers Association, the Reichhardt Raiders, and the Blitz Brothers. His dedication earned him numerous awards and recognition throughout his career. Born in Joliet to Charles F. and Catherine M. (nee Briski) Reichhardt, George leaves behind his daughter Julie K. Reichhardt, his brother Donald J. (Barbara) Reichhardt, and his sister Katherine Sheck. He is also survived by step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who cherished his warmth and humor. George worked as a firefighter at the Army Ammunition Plant, East Joliet Fire Protection District, Fermilab, and Rockdale Fire Protection District. He also served as a FAE Instructor and MABAS 15 Fire Photographer. His passion extended beyond the job—his hobbies included photographing fire trucks, trains, towboats, and collecting fire memorabilia. One of his favorite memories was riding Chicago Squad 3 in its early days. He was the editor of two notable publications: *Fire Apparatus Photo Album of the Ford Tilt Cabs – The Visiting Fireman* (1985) and *Darley Fire Apparatus – The Visiting Fireman* (1987). These works remain valuable resources for fire service historians and collectors alike. The family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, 102 E. Frances Rd, New Lenox on Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 2:00 PM until the services begin at 8:00 PM. A fire department walk-through will take place starting at 7:00 PM. George’s legacy lives on through the photographs, friendships, and memories he left behind. His contributions to the fire service community will never be forgotten. [Show slideshow]
