The newly acquired Pierce Arrow XT fire engine assigned to Glenview Engine 8 earlier this year marks several significant differences compared to the previous models used for Engines 6 and 7. One of the most noticeable changes is the heavier Arrow XT cab/chassis, which is a marked departure from the Enforcer models we’ve had before. Additionally, the Arrow XT came equipped with a robust heavy steel bumper, unlike the chrome bumpers on the older models. Another major difference lies in the body design. Engine 8 boasts a larger body with deeper 'rescue-style' compartments. The first compartment features a slide-out tool board, while the rear compartment houses a full complement of hydraulic extrication tools. There are also 'coffin-style' compartments accessible from the top of the body, designed to store cord reels for the hydraulic tools and hazardous materials supplies. Engine 8 serves as the primary haz-mat response unit in our area and works alongside Truck 14 for extrication duties. Engines 6, 7, and 13 have 'combi-tools' for minor pin-ins, but only Engine 8 and Truck 14 are fully equipped with the extensive array of tools needed.
As for future acquisitions, Glenview appears to be in the early stages of planning for two more engines. One will follow the standard engine body configuration, while the other is expected to mimic Engine 8's 'rescue-style' setup. However, this second engine will not be configured for haz-mat duties; instead, it will carry equipment specifically for technical rescue operations.
The body of Engine 8 is notably taller and features much deeper compartments than those found on earlier Pierce engines. This design allows for enhanced storage capacity and better organization of essential firefighting tools. For instance, the slide-out tool board in the first compartment provides easy access to necessary gear, while the rear compartments can accommodate the full range of hydraulic extrication tools required during emergencies. The rear of Engine 8 also showcases the depth of its right-side compartments and includes an NFPA-compliant rear chevron for improved visibility and safety.
Engine 8 is fully stocked with hydraulic tools and responds to calls requiring extrication assistance throughout the village, working alongside Truck 14 and the still operational Engine. This engine’s capabilities make it a vital asset in our firefighting arsenal, ensuring we can handle complex situations effectively. With these updates and planned additions, Glenview continues to strengthen its emergency response capabilities, reflecting our commitment to public safety and efficient operations.
While Engine 8 sets a high standard with its advanced features and specialized equipment, the upcoming engines promise further enhancements to our fleet, offering greater flexibility and readiness for various emergency scenarios. These developments underscore our ongoing efforts to maintain a modern and capable fire department ready to serve the community at all times.
