Harbin Electric Machinery Factory 840 MW hydropower unit ranks internationally leading

In recent developments in Yichang, Hubei Province, the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology has officially recognized Harbin Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. (Ha Electric) as a key player in China's "Major Air-to-Air Cold Water Turbine Generator Key Technology and Equipment Development" project. This recognition was made during an appraisal session attended by a panel of distinguished experts and officials. Liang Weiyan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chair of the appraisal committee, along with other notable figures such as Lei Qingquan and Tang Renyuan, both also academicians, Huang Ling from the State Council's Three Construction Committees, Zhang Changbin from the Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Department, and Jiang Zhisheng from the Heilongjiang Provincial Machinery Federation, were present. Additionally, Yangtze River representatives Liu Liren and Cheng Yongquan, along with Zhang Cheng, CEO of China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd., and other expert members, evaluated the project and concluded that it has reached international leading standards. Fu Jianping, deputy director of the Three Gorges Power Plant under China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd., reported that the No. 26 and No. 25 full-air-cooled turbine generator sets supplied by Ha Electric are operating smoothly, meeting all contractual performance criteria. The model test data, real machine data, and design calculations for the ventilation system show a high degree of consistency, confirming the reliability of the technology. Experts have not only praised the achievements of the "Giant Full-Air-Cooled Turbine Generator Key Technology and Equipment Development" project but also offered valuable suggestions for future development. Fu Yuanchu, former deputy general manager of China National Water Resources and Hydropower Construction Corporation, highlighted that Ha Electric has ushered in a new era in all-air-cooled large generator technology. The company has achieved its technological goals in electromagnetic, ventilation, and insulation systems, reaching world-class standards. This is considered a major breakthrough in China’s hydroelectric power generation. The expert appraisal noted that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station houses 32 units, each with a capacity of 700 MW (up to 840 MW), making it the largest hydropower station globally in terms of both single-unit and total installed capacity. Among these, six units—Units 25, 26, 31, and 32—are full-air-cooled water turbine generators independently designed and manufactured by Ha Electric. Since their official commissioning, these units have consistently met all technical and design requirements, with turbine stability and generator temperature rise indices exceeding both standard and contractual specifications. The successful development of the 840 MW full-air-cooled turbine generator set has significantly advanced the overall development of hydraulic design, electromagnetic design, ventilation systems, insulation technology, structural design, and manufacturing processes. It has greatly enhanced the independent R&D capabilities of giant hydroelectric generators. Key innovations include: First, breakthroughs in hydraulic turbine design, solving the pressure pulsation issue in the high partial load zone of the Three Gorges left bank unit. Second, a major advancement in the application of full-air-cooling technology for large-capacity hydro-generators, resulting in the world’s largest 840 MW all-air-cooled water turbine generator. Third, the use of advanced wire corner field strength treatment and anti-halation technologies, improving the dielectric properties, electrical aging resistance, and anti-halation performance of wire rods. Given Ha Electric’s proven capability in designing and developing 840 MW units and its growing international influence, the expert group recommended that the company begin research on the next-generation 1000 MW class air-cooled water turbine generator set. This forward-looking initiative reflects confidence in Ha Electric’s continued leadership in the global hydropower sector.
