This year's Spring Festival was anything but ordinary for Shaanxi Huashan Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. While most people were celebrating with family, the majority of the company's staff chose to stay at work, working around the clock to unload 30,000 tons of phosphate ore from 500 wagons.
The situation became critical due to a severe snowstorm in southern China, which caused significant delays in the transportation of phosphate rock from Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. The frozen cargo had become nearly impossible to handle, and many migrant workers who usually helped with unloading had already left. With over 400 wagons waiting at the station and no raw materials being supplied, the compound fertilizer plant faced a major crisis that could disrupt the entire local rail system.
On January 16, the leadership of the compound fertilizer plant made an urgent decision: all employees not on production duty would be mobilized to help with unloading. Despite their efforts, the frozen ore proved extremely difficult to move. Shovels couldn’t break through, and even the strongest tools only produced sparks. Eventually, the team had to bring in two large excavators to break up the ice-locked cargo, while workers manually removed the remaining chunks using steel rods and sledgehammers.
The effort did not go unnoticed. The group’s senior management quickly took action, sending teams from the headquarters and its branches to assist. A total of 1,200 employees worked daily, unloading more than 50 wagons each day. By February 16, the company had successfully unloaded 7.2 million tons of phosphate ore from 1,200 wagons, ensuring the smooth operation of the entire supply chain. This remarkable effort highlighted the dedication and resilience of the Huashan team during one of the most challenging times of the year.
