In recent developments, the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology has officially recognized Harbin Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. (Ha Electric) as a key participant in China's "Major Air-to-Air Cold Water Turbine Generator Key Technology and Equipment Development" project, during an appraisal event held in Yichang, Hubei Province. The evaluation was conducted by a panel of distinguished experts, including Liang Weiyan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chair of the appraisal committee, along with other notable figures such as Lei Qingquan and Tang Renyuan, also academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Huang Ling from the State Council’s Three Gorges Construction Committee, Zhang Changbin from the Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Department, and Jiang Zhisheng from the Heilongjiang Provincial Machinery Federation.
Representatives from the Three Gorges Project Development Corporation, including Liu Liren and Cheng Yongquan, as well as Zhang Cheng, CEO of China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd., were also present. After thorough examination, the expert group concluded that the project has reached international leading standards. According to Fu Jianping, deputy director of the Three Gorges Power Plant, the No. 25 and No. 26 full-air-cooled turbine generator sets supplied by Ha Electric are operating smoothly, meeting all contractual performance requirements. Data from model tests, real machine operations, and design calculations show consistent results, confirming the reliability of the ventilation system.
Experts praised the significant achievements of the "Giant Full-Air Cold Water Turbine Generator Key Technology and Equipment Development" project, while offering valuable suggestions for future improvements. Fu Yuanchu, former deputy general manager of China National Water Resources and Hydropower Construction Corporation, highlighted that Ha Electric has pioneered a new era in all-air-cooled giant generator technology. The company has successfully achieved its technical goals in electromagnetic, ventilation, and insulation design, reaching world-leading levels. This marks a major breakthrough for China's hydroelectric power generation sector.
The expert appraisal emphasized that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, with a total of 32 units, each rated at 700 MW (with a maximum capacity of 840 MW), is the largest hydropower station globally in terms of both single-unit capacity and total installed power. Among these, six units—Units 25, 26, 31, and 32—are all-air-cooled water turbine generators independently designed and manufactured by Ha Electric. Since their official commissioning, the technical performance has met all required standards and design specifications. The turbine stability and generator temperature rise indices have even exceeded the contractual requirements.
The successful development of the 840 MW all-air-cooled turbine generator has significantly advanced the overall development of the unit, covering hydraulic design, electromagnetic design, ventilation systems, insulation technology, structural design, and manufacturing processes. This has greatly enhanced the capability of giant hydroelectric generators to be independently developed, designed, and manufactured.
Key innovations of the project include: first, breakthroughs in hydraulic turbine design, particularly solving the pressure pulsation issue in the high partial load area of the Three Gorges right bank units. Second, a major advancement in applying complete air-cooling technology to large-capacity hydro-generators, resulting in the world’s largest 840 MW all-air-cooled water turbine generator. Third, the implementation of advanced wire corner field strength treatment and anti-halation technologies, significantly improving the dielectric properties, electrical aging resistance, and anti-halation performance of the wire rods.
Given Ha Electric's proven capabilities in designing and developing the 840 MW unit and its growing influence on the global stage, the expert group recommended that the company initiate research into the development of a 1000 MW class air-cooled water turbine generator set, further solidifying its position as a leader in the field of hydroelectric power technology.
