Finding your dream car has never been simpler thanks to the internet. Whether you're eyeing a globally recognized brand or something more niche that might not even be available in your region, every car manufacturer is just a click away. If you've ever wondered which car brand reigns supreme in global searches, you're not alone. With the help of Google Trends data from 2022, provided by Compare the Market, we can now see the most searched car brands across 155 countries.
First up, Toyota continues its winning streak, taking the top spot for the third consecutive year. This Japanese powerhouse claimed the title in 69 of those countries, accounting for 44.5% of all searches. Toyota's dominance isn't surprising when you consider its reputation as the most reliable car brand in 2022, according to Consumer Reports. Plus, the company introduced or refreshed over 15 models last year, keeping it at the forefront of consumer interest. Interestingly, although the U.S. led in Toyota searches, Ford remains America's favorite.
Next, BMW made impressive strides, climbing from 29 to 36 countries where it was the most searched brand. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz faced a setback, dropping from 23 to just 10 countries. Regional preferences play a big role too—Kia has soared in popularity in the Middle East and North Africa, appearing at the top in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and Uzbekistan. It’s also notable in Ecuador, India, and Vietnam. On the other hand, Volvo dominates in Scandinavia and nearby regions, holding a strong position in Sweden, Finland, and even securing second place in Norway and third in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Looking at the brands that slipped from the spotlight, Renault, Rolls-Royce, and Mazda, which once held top spots in some countries, didn't make it into the top tier this year. Despite this, they remain popular choices in various regions. Tesla, which was a top search in five countries in 2021, saw a significant dip in 2022, with no country listing it as their most searched brand. This could be attributed to the rise of new EV-exclusive brands like Polestar, Lucid, and Rivian, along with mainstream automakers like Volvo transitioning fully to electric vehicles by 2030.
As the automotive landscape evolves, so do consumer preferences, making it fascinating to see how these trends continue to shift.
