Wind energy can reduce 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2020

On October 30, the Global Wind Energy Council released the “Global Wind Energy Outlook 2008” report at the Beijing International Exhibition Center (new hall). The report predicts that by 2020, wind energy will meet 12% of global energy demand and reduce CO2 emissions by 10 billion tons.
The report also pointed out that China has become the world's fastest growing country in wind energy, and is expected to become the world's largest producer of wind energy equipment in 2009.
The report was released at the 2008 Beijing International Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition and the Fourth Global Wind Energy Conference. According to the report, currently 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions come from the field of power generation, while wind energy can reduce 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, helping the world achieve the 2020 emission reduction targets set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). According to the IPCC report, in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, global carbon dioxide emissions should peak in 2020 and begin to decline gradually.
“We have only 10 years left to achieve the goal of reducing CO2 emissions globally, and wind energy will play a vital role. No other energy can meet the electricity demand in such a short period of time and there is almost no carbon emissions. "The wind energy will be the only reliable energy technology that can immediately enter the stage of large-scale application, and the government will only be determined to promote the realization of this application," said Su Siqi, secretary-general of the Global Wind Energy Council.
In addition, so far, wind energy has directly or indirectly created more than 350,000 “green collar” jobs for the society; by 2020, the wind power industry will employ 2 million people.
"Wind power will play a leading role in the future of fuelless power generation," said Green Peace's renewable energy expert Sven Teske. "We urge governments to actively carry out the energy revolution as soon as possible to support the development of wind power and actively promote the formation of a global climate change agreement."
At the conference, the chairman of the Global Wind Energy Council, Mr. Övers Zavors, stated that “the report shows that wind power technology is not just a dream, but a reality. This reality will soon enter the scale of development. The next few The political decisions during the year will determine the global environment and economic development in the coming decades."
When talking about China's wind power industry, Yang Ailun, Greenpeace China Climate and Energy Project Manager, said, “Only in 2007, domestic coal caused an external loss of more than 1.70 billion yuan in environmental, social, and economic costs, which is equivalent to the year’s domestic production. The total value is 7.1%. Therefore, China needs to seize opportunities to develop wind power and other renewable energy sources and reduce its dependence on coal."
It is reported that the 14th meeting of the COP of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) will be held in Poznan, Poland, in December of this year. At that time, the Wind Energy Enterprise Alliance, industry associations and non-governmental organizations will jointly launch an “WindPowerWorks” advocacy campaign to promote the government's active use of wind energy. The event lasts for one year and is scheduled to end during the fifteenth COP in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009.
