American Automotive Engineering Specialist Bernhard is elected as Cummins Director


Professor Robert Bernhard, senior vice president of the University of Notre Dame, a senior expert in automotive engineering in the United States, was elected as a director of Cummins Inc.

October 14, 2008 - Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced that Robert Bernhard, Vice President of Engineering and Professor of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, was elected as a company director.

Professor Bernhard has extensive experience in scientific research and engineering technology. Prior to joining the University of Notre Dame in 2007, Bernhard worked as a professor of engineering and researcher at Purdue University for 25 years. During this period (2004-2007), Assistant Vice President of Research at Purdue University.

Bernhard joined Westinghouse in 1973 and began his career as a career engineer. Bernhard has two patents and is one of the top experts in the field of noise control in the United States, especially in tire and traffic noise control.

Professor Bernhard has long been active in a number of engineering academic institutions, including the American Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Noise Control Engineers, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Bernhard is the tenth member of the Cummins Board of Directors and will be responsible for the Finance, Corporate Governance and Nomination, Safety, Environment and Technology Committees. The term of office will be between now and May 2009, when the Cummins Annual General Meeting will then vote for re-election. All Cummins directors are elected through the annual general meeting of shareholders.

Professor Bernhard received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University, a master's degree and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland and the University of Iowa.
