The Gurnee Fire Department responded to a fire at the iconic golden pyramid house located at 37921 N Dilleys Road in Wadsworth on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. The unique structure, built as a private home in the 1970s, became the center of attention after it caught fire, sending thick smoke and flames into the sky.
According to reports from Chicago.cbslocal.com, the fire broke out around 4 p.m. at the six-story, 17,000-square-foot home, which is surrounded by Egyptian statues and a moat. The building, known for its unusual design, posed significant challenges for firefighters trying to contain the blaze.
The 80-year-old homeowner, who also designed the home, was inside during the fire. He suffers from dementia and was in a wheelchair when the incident occurred. Fortunately, his caregiver and emergency responders managed to get him out safely. Tragically, a 15-year-old Yorkie dog died in the fire.
Fire officials described the situation as extremely dangerous, with a wind-driven fire causing a "mayday" explosion on the fourth floor. They compared the intensity of the flames to a blowtorch that knocked firefighters off their feet. Two firefighters were injured in the process.
Gurnee Battalion Chief David Douglas shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “We’ve done walkthroughs through this building before and we knew the challenges that would come. Today those came true.â€
