This message comes from Drew Smith:
Back in March, while attending the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD, I had the chance to visit the National Fire Heritage Center http://nationalfireheritagecenter.org/. The NFHC is dedicated to preserving the written history of the American fire service. During my visit, one exhibit immediately caught my attention—a detailed map of the City of Chicago created by Hal Bruno. Located in the upper right corner of the map were three cards featuring signatures from CFD companies. I managed to take photos of only the first two before my camera battery died.
In the lower left section of the board, there was a list of companies, and push pins were color-coded to represent different types of units—engines, trucks, squads, fog pressure, ambulances, and special units. Alongside the map, there were also official CFD credentials issued to Hal by Commissioner Quinn. These items were part of Hal’s personal collection, which he donated to the NFHC.
If you're not familiar with Hal Bruno's work, he was a lifelong Chicago native who started his career as a newspaper reporter before becoming a political director at ABC News. He was also a volunteer firefighter, wrote a long-running column for FIREHOUSE magazine, and served as chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation before passing away. His dedication to preserving fire service history is truly remarkable.
