This message comes from Drew Smith:
Back in March, while attending the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, I had the chance to visit the National Fire Heritage Center http://nationalfireheritagecenter.org/. The NFHC is dedicated to preserving the written history of the American fire service. One particular exhibit caught my attention—a map of Chicago created by Hal Bruno. It was displayed on a large board with several elements that made it both informative and visually engaging.
In the upper right corner, there were three cards featuring signatures from CFD companies. I managed to photograph the first two before my camera battery died. On the lower left side of the board, there was a list of companies, and push pins were color-coded to represent different units—engines, trucks, squads, fog pressure, ambulances, and special units. Alongside this, there were official CFD credentials issued to Hal by Commissioner Quinn, which added a personal touch to the display.
Besides this map, there were several other items from Hal’s collection now housed at the NFHC. He was a long-time Chicago resident who started his career as a newspaper reporter and later worked for ABC News as a political director. Hal was also a volunteer firefighter and contributed regularly to FIREHOUSE magazine. Before his passing, he served as chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the fire service community.
Air hoses are typically made of durable materials such as rubber, PVC, or polyurethane, which can withstand high-pressure air and resist abrasion, weathering, and chemicals. They come in various lengths, diameters, and colors to suit different needs and preferences.
