On July 6, South African tire manufacturers held a seminar to publicly condemn the flood of cheap imported tire products, especially those from China, and expect to submit an application for anti-dumping investigations on Chinese tires to the South African International Trade Management Committee before September this year.
Discussions suggest that cheap imported tires not only reduce the production of local producers, but also put consumers' lives at risk because imported tires are not tailor-made for South African roads. During the driving of the car, several tire explosions have occurred. The final plan of the producers' meeting was to curb the importers' illegal sales of inferior tires and plans to submit an anti-dumping investigation application to the regulatory authorities again before September this year.
The seminar represented the top four top tire manufacturers in the country, and Bridgestone, Continental Horse, Goodyear and Sumitomo participated in the seminar. The four companies produced 10 million tires in South Africa last year, of which 8.5 million were sold in South Africa and the rest exported to Europe and other parts of Africa.
This is the second time the industry has tried to get regulators to launch anti-dumping investigations on cheap Chinese imports. In October 2005, the South African tire industry first contacted the South African International Trade Management Committee to launch an anti-dumping investigation against Chinese automobile tires. The South African International Trade Management Board considered that there was insufficient evidence of dumping of Chinese tires and made a final ruling in April 2007.
