Chinese scientists successfully developed gearless drive motors

Recently, it was revealed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China that a group of Chinese scientists has successfully developed a low-speed, high-torque rare earth permanent magnet synchronous motor that integrates the motor with the mechanical load. This innovative design has achieved performance metrics that are now at an international advanced level, marking a significant breakthrough in motor technology. Traditionally, small and medium-sized motors have struggled to meet the demands of low-speed, high-torque applications without the use of gear reducers. These reducers, while necessary, often lead to inefficiencies such as reduced transmission efficiency, larger equipment size, higher material consumption, increased noise levels, and issues with lubricant contamination. In response, researchers worldwide have been exploring ways to eliminate mechanical reducers from low-speed, high-torque systems. By combining microelectronics, power electronics, and motor technology, they aim to create an integrated electronic-mechanical system—essentially a gearless drive solution. Experts emphasize that one of the main challenges in this approach is eliminating torque ripple in the motor at low speeds. A research team led by Professor Zhang Bingyi from Shenyang University of Technology discovered that optimizing the internal potential waveform of the permanent magnet synchronous motor to be more sinusoidal is key to solving this issue. Through extensive experimentation, they successfully developed a motor that meets all the required specifications for this new system. This innovation is expected to have wide-ranging applications across various industries, including CNC machines, petrochemical equipment, electric machinery, and metallurgical and mining machinery. It offers significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency, reduced consumption, and enhanced mechanical performance. Moreover, it represents a major step forward in the design and performance improvement of mechanical systems, with great potential for future development and market adoption.
