Chinese scientists successfully developed gearless drive motors

Recently, it was revealed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China that a group of Chinese scientists has successfully developed a low-speed, high-torque rare earth permanent magnet synchronous motor that integrates the motor with the mechanical load. This innovative technology has achieved performance levels that are comparable to the best in the world. Traditional motors, especially small and medium-sized ones, often struggle to meet the demands of low-speed and high-torque applications directly. As a result, gear reducers have become a necessary part of most mechanical systems. However, the use of gearboxes can lead to several issues, including reduced transmission efficiency, increased system size, higher material consumption, greater noise levels, and significant lubricant contamination. To address these challenges, researchers around the world have been working on eliminating mechanical gearboxes from low-speed, high-torque systems. By integrating the motor with the mechanical load using advanced microelectronics and power electronics, they aim to create an electronic-mechanical integrated drive system—essentially a gearless solution. Experts point out that one of the main technical challenges in this approach is eliminating torque ripple at low frequencies when the gearbox is removed. A research team led by Professor Zhang Bingyi from Shenyang University of Technology discovered that smoothing the internal voltage waveform of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is crucial to solving this issue. Through extensive testing, they successfully developed a motor that meets all the required specifications. This breakthrough holds great promise for future development and practical applications. It can be widely used in various industries such as CNC machines, petrochemical equipment, electric machinery, and mining and metallurgical systems. By replacing traditional gearboxes, this technology not only improves energy efficiency but also reduces overall equipment size and maintenance costs. It represents a significant step forward in the design and performance enhancement of mechanical systems, paving the way for smarter and more sustainable industrial solutions.
